In 2018, with the support of the Mingus Institute, I co-founded and directed this music collective based on legendary musician Charles Mingus’ vision of fusing North American jazz and Colombian tropical music. This musical project was founded on research that uncovered previously unknown details about the creation of Charles Mingus’ album, Cumbia & Jazz Fusion. After reuniting several members of the original album with a new ensemble of 11 Colombian musicians, Cumbia & Jazz Fusion was recreated with traditional Colombian cumbia instruments and presented at various festivals throughout the country.
